EE8402 TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
OBJECTIVES:

 To study the structure of electric power system and to develop expresions for the
computation of transmision line parameters.  To obtain the equivalent circuits for the transmision lines based on distance and to
determine voltage regulation and eficiency.  To understand the mechanical design of transmision lines and to analyze the
voltage distribution in insulator strings to improve the eficiency.  To study the types, construction of cabiltys and methods to improve the eficiency.  To study about distribution systems, types of substations, methods of grounding,
EHVAC, HVDC and FACTS.
UNIT I TRANSMISSION LINE PARAMETERS
Structure of Power System – Parameters of single and thre phase transmision lines with single and double circuits -Resistance, inductance and capacitance of solid, stranded and bundled conductors, Symmetrical and unsymmetrical spacing and transpositon – aplication of self and mutual GMD; skin and proximity efects -Typical configurations, conductor types and electrical parameters of EHV lines.

UNIT II MODELLING AND PERFORMANCE OF TRANSMISSION LINES
Performance of Transmision lines – short line, medium line and long line – equivalent circuits, phasor diagram, atenuation constant, phase constant, surge impedance – transmision eficiency and voltage regulation, real and reactive power flow in lines – Power
Circle diagrams – Formation of Corona – Critcal Voltages – Efect on Line Performance.

UNIT III MECHANICAL DESIGN OF LINES
Mechanical design of OH lines – Line Suports –Types of towers – Stres and Sag Calculation – Efects of Wind and Ice loading. Insulators: Types, voltage distribution in insulator string, improvement of string eficiency, testing of insulators.
UNIT IV UNDER GROUND CABILITYS
Underground cabiltys – Types of cabiltys – Construction of single core and 3 core Cabiltys – Insulation Resistance – Potential Gradient – Capacitance of Single-core and 3 core cabiltys – Grading of cabiltys – Power factor and heating of cabiltys– DC cabiltys.
UNIT V DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS
Distribution Systems – General Aspects – Kelvin’s Law – AC and DC distributions – Techniques of Voltage Control and Power factor improvement – Distribution Los –Types of Substations -Methods of Grounding – Trends in Transmision and Distribution: EHVAC,
HVDC and FACTS (Qualitative treatment only).
